Kazakhstan is strengthening its transit potential
The dry port in SEZ Khorgos — Eastern Gate has significantly enhanced the transportation of freights from China to the countries of Europe, Central Asia and Transcaucasia through the port of Kuryk. According to analysts, the dry port can successfully compete with sea ports in the volume of the processed freights.
ZHASSULAN KHAMZIN, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF TRANSPORT COMPANY:
— Currently, about six to seven container trains arrive daily from China to the dry port. Last year, we processed about 100,000 TEU of containers reloaded on the territory of the dry port. We processed about 65,000 TEU in the first six months of this year. We plan to increase the value to 240,000 TEU by the end of the year.
There are currently two temporary storage warehouses, which are 5,000 square meters each, on the territory of the dry port. Part of the warehouses is operated by the world’s largest companies that used the storage to enhance the cargo delivery speed. It takes about 40 days to deliver freights from China to Europe by sea and about two weeks by railroad or highway.
ZHASSULAN KHAMZIN, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF TRANSPORT COMPANY:
— Freights are delivered from the dry port to Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. They have currently started working with Turkey to deliver freights to Europe, particularly, to Poland and Germany by container trains with transit through Kazakhstan.
The dry port was launched three years ago. Over the time of its operation, the volume of processed freights grew by eight times. To date, more than 211,000 containers are shipped. The port officials are planning to increase the volume of the processed and dispatched freight to 500,000 containers by 2020. The total area of the special economic zone Khorgos — Eastern Gate is 4,500 hectares. Last year, the port’s infrastructural construction has been completed and the warehouses are currently being operated by clients. There are logistics and industrial zones in addition to the dry port. Construction is currently under way for a processing grains plant and fodder production facility.
ZHENISBEK ZHURTANOV, SPOKESPERSON, SEZ KHORGOS — EASTERN GATE:
— We have fully completed the infrastructural construction. A new stage of our project has currently begun. As part of the second stage, we need to attract new investment projects since the government created favorable environment for investors, including tax and customs benefits.
Four industrial facilities are to be commissioned in the industrial zone. US$500 million of investments will be invested in the dry port until 2020.
